How are you involved in education?
I’m about to graduate with my PhD in linguistics from Georgetown University, where I do sociolinguistic and anthropological research on mathematics classroom interaction in secondary and higher ed. I work mainly with students from underserved demographic groups, and look at reasons why they feel disconnected from mathematics as a content area.
Before I went back to school, I worked as a high school ESL and mathematics teacher, and as a test developer on WIDA ACCESS. I’m also the parent of a primary student at LAMB PCS in DC.
Have you ever attended an edcamp or unconference before?
I organized a mini-unconference event for networking among graduate students in applied linguistics at the AAAL 2014 conference in Portland, OR.
What do you hope to get out of edcamp MetroDC?
I want to get to know some creative, reflective people from the local education community who could be future colleagues and collaborators.
If you led a session at edcamp MetroDC, what would you present?
- Inquiry-based pedagogy.
- Video clubs and lesson study for teacher professional development.
