What is an edcamp? What is an unconference?
This event is based on the edcamp model, also known as an unconference (http://edcamp.org). edcamps are:
- Open to everyone
- Created by participants on the day of the edcamp
- Sessions facilitated by anyone – experience not experts
- Reliant on the “rule of two feet” that empowers everyone to find session that meet their needs
- Vendor-free events
Who can attend?
edcamps were designed as professional development opportunities for teachers by teachers. However, they are open to all who are interested in education. Last year attendees came from all over the greater Metro DC area (and beyond). We are happy to host classroom teachers, librarians, administrators, coaches, school board members, and edtech entrepreneurs.
What topics are covered at the sessions?
Since sessions are participant-driven, they could be about anything you are interested in discussing. Past sessions have included:
|Culturally competent teaching||1:1 Learning – What does it look like?|
|Five minute film school (activity)||Designing Interdisciplinary Curriculum|
|Anarchist approaches to teacher education and professional development||Reflections on Middle School Foreign Language blended learning classes|
|Formative assessment with or without tech||Libraries and tech… eBooks or not? Best use of tech in libraries|
|Mindfulness / building an empathetic community||Integrating design + the maker movement into lower elementary classes|
How do I prepare?
Prepare to whatever level you are comfortable. You don’t have to lead a session, but we do encourage you to share your passions and best practices as well as your dilemmas, and concerns. Some edcampers come without doing any prep work; some come with an idea of what they want to discus. Others prepare more formal presentations. If you do prepare a presentation, make sure it will last no more than 20 minutes so as to allow time to facilitate a discussion on your topic.
Will there be food?
Yes! We will have breakfast available, and will coordinate a lunch at a local restaurant. More information to come.
What does it cost?
Nothing! As with all edcamps, edcamp MetroDC is completely free!
Can I promote my business or staff a booth?
The conference will be free from corporate vendors and booths, with the focus being primarily on conversations about education. That being said, edcamp MetroDC is open to anyone interested in the state of education. We also have a variety of sponsors who will provide support for the event through services, items for our swag bags, and raffle prizes! Contact us if you are interested in being a sponsor.
